1. Overview
SmartType is a text productivity app and keyboard that helps you save, organize, search, sync, and insert snippets and related content across supported Apple devices.
We try to keep data collection limited to what is reasonably necessary to run the app, improve reliability, support users, manage subscriptions, and provide optional cloud and AI-powered features.
2. What We Collect
We collect only limited information that is reasonably necessary to operate SmartType and related services.
- Analytics and diagnostics: app usage events, device and app version information, country or region-level data, performance information, and crash data.
- Support communications: your email address and any information you choose to include when contacting support.
- Purchase and subscription information: limited purchase or subscription status received from Apple and subscription infrastructure used to unlock paid features.
Your snippets, snippet names, folders, boards, template values, shared items, and related content are stored locally on your device and, if you enable sync, may be synced securely through Apple's iCloud and CloudKit services.
Selected text, current text context, and clipboard content may be accessed locally on your device only when you intentionally use a feature that depends on those inputs. We do not collect or transmit that information to us or third parties unless you explicitly choose to submit content through a feature that requires it.
If you choose to use an AI-powered feature, only the text, prompts, or other content that you explicitly submit for that feature may be sent to OpenRouter and relevant model providers to generate a response. This does not happen automatically as part of ordinary keyboard use.
Voice feature processing, if available, is intended to occur on-device.
3. Keyboard Privacy
We know you place a high level of trust in any keyboard app, and we take that seriously.
- We do not collect or log what you type simply because you type it.
- We do not use your keyboard input for tracking or advertising.
- We do not intentionally collect passwords, payment card numbers, or other sensitive typed information just because it passes through the keyboard.
- Content is sent outside your device only if you explicitly choose to use a feature that requires it, such as AI processing or sharing.
Some SmartType functionality may require iOS keyboard "Full Access." When Full Access is enabled, SmartType may use network access for features such as syncing, sharing, AI-powered tools, and related online services. Enabling Full Access does not mean SmartType collects everything you type.
4. How We Use Information
We use the limited information we collect to:
- provide and maintain SmartType and its core functionality;
- sync and share your content through Apple's iCloud and CloudKit services when you enable those features;
- process AI requests only when you explicitly choose to submit content to an AI-powered feature;
- support on-device voice features when enabled;
- measure app usage, fix crashes, improve stability, and prioritize product improvements;
- manage subscriptions, premium access, trials, and purchase restoration;
- respond to support requests and service-related questions;
- protect the app, users, and our services from abuse, fraud, or technical misuse.
6. Payments and Subscriptions
All purchases, subscriptions, trials, billing, and refunds are handled by Apple through the App Store or Mac App Store. We do not receive your full payment card details.
We may receive limited subscription or transaction status information needed to confirm purchases, restore access, and manage premium features.
7. Data Retention
We keep information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including to provide the app, maintain cloud features, troubleshoot issues, comply with legal obligations, and resolve disputes.
Content stored locally on your device or in your Apple cloud services may remain there until you delete it, remove the app, disable sync, or delete the related data through Apple or your device settings.
8. Your Choices and Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or restriction of certain personal information, and to object to some processing activities.
You may also be able to manage certain data directly through your device settings, Apple account settings, subscription settings, app permissions, or by contacting the relevant third-party provider where appropriate.

9. Children
SmartType is not directed to children below the age of digital consent in their jurisdiction. If you believe a child has provided personal information inappropriately through the app, please contact us.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date on this page. Continued use of SmartType after an update means the updated policy will apply.
